S'gela Connect was founded on a simple truth: South Africa's township schools are full of brilliant, committed learners — they just lack the digital visibility to tell their stories and attract the support they deserve.
When S'gela Connect was founded, roughly 29,000 South African schools existed — yet only about 1,500 had a website. And almost all of those were former Model C or historically advantaged schools.
Township schools in Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Philippi, Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain, Langa, Ottery, and across Gauteng were doing remarkable work with committed learners — in near-total digital silence.
We set out to fix it: professional digital infrastructure for the schools that need it most, made affordable through a smart CSI partnership model.
Over a decade of real, on-the-ground community impact — before we scaled a single website.
Our flagship Christmas event brought 80+ vulnerable children from Khayelitsha and surrounding townships to Ratanga Junction for the very first time — a day of rides, joy, and a family-style dinner. Not charity. Dignity.
After a year of grassroots results, the project was formally adopted as a social impact initiative under Flatela Inc PTY LTD, providing the operational structure, resources, and mandate to scale the mission nationally.
A prestigious evening honouring disadvantaged learners who showed unwavering commitment to school despite the hardest of circumstances. Not grades — grit.
"You are not here because you're an A+ student. You're here because despite the conditions you live in, you are still committed to school."
That same year, 2 bursary students were placed into Engineering programmes at UCT and UWC.
Operating across Cape Town townships and Gauteng with partners including Giants of S.A., Hefcom, KHEMO IT Solutions, Computer4Kids, Langa Methodist Church, and Cape Arts & Craft. Multiple streams of on-the-ground impact documented with photos and specific numbers.
Combining our community credibility with a scalable, recurring-revenue model: premium websites for previously disadvantaged schools at R0 upfront, funded by corporate CSI sponsorships. Growing towards 1,800 schools across all 9 provinces by Year 3.
These aren't press-release initiatives. These are on-the-ground programmes with partners, documented results, and real faces.
In partnership with Khalagunya / Mbele Social Concept, we ran computer literacy training and Computer Villages in Khayelitsha/Litha Park and Ottery — combining digital skills with life skills for primary school learners.
Annual recognition event celebrating learners who show commitment to school despite hardship. The 2012 debut included bursary placements into UCT and UWC Engineering programmes. Target: 1,000+ students supported nationally.
80+ vulnerable children from Khayelitsha enjoyed Ratanga Junction and a family dinner in 2011. Not just fun — a statement that township children deserve the same holiday experiences as any other child in South Africa.
An annual gathering for elderly community members to combat isolation and build intergenerational connection. First held at Plattekloof in 2012. Connecting generations builds safer communities — planned to roll out nationally.
Annual school shirt and shoe donations in Gauteng; monthly food parcels for child-headed households and vulnerable families; clothes drives tied to soup kitchens across Cape Town townships.
Connecting committed learners with tertiary funding. 2012 placed 2 students into Engineering at UCT and UWC. Near-term target: R150,000 in bursary support, scaling to 1,000+ students nationally via our corporate partner network.
Our roots are in Cape Town's townships and Gauteng. The national rollout is underway.
None of this work is done alone. These organisations have walked alongside us since the beginning.
Already planned. Already in motion. The S'gela pipeline builds on everything we've done since 2011.
Township schools paired with Model C and suburban schools for collaboration, shared online resources, and joint projects — breaking down physical and social barriers.
Structured excursions giving township learners access to experiences that broaden horizons, spark career imagination, and show what's possible beyond the township.
Soccer and street soccer in Vosloorus — diverting township youth from crime through sport, mentorship, community pride, and structured facilities.
Expanding computer literacy centres to all major townships nationally — building digital foundational skills at primary school level before learners even reach high school.
Inter-school debate leagues building critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement among learners across the growing S'gela network.
Scaling from 2 placements in 2012 to 1,000+ students supported nationally — connecting committed township learners with corporates and alumni who want to invest in their futures.
Whether you're a school principal, a parent, a corporate CSI manager, or an alumnus who wants to give back — there's a place for you in the S'gela Connect ecosystem.
